If the thought or question of “Should I start a blog/online business” has ever crossed your mind, congratulations! You’re way ahead of thousands and thousands of people who have never even thought about doing this and gain the financial and time freedom that comes with it.
I started out at the age of 21, while studying and working a full time corporate job because that is what I always envisioned myself doing.
You see, I’m not one of the “I always had the traits of a born entrepreneur” or “I loved sales and marketing” kind of person. Heck, I hated sales because I had the social skills of a chicken nugget.
Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to know that if I can start an online business and be on my way to make an extra couple thousand dollars a month, so can you.
I’m your average Jane and it is important for you to know this so that you know that you don’t need to have a special background or in-born talent to do this. Nuh-uh.
Don’t get me wrong, blogging does require you to put in a lot of work and is in no way about sipping mimosas on the beach as you write and get rich overnight. At the same time, the skills you require to build and run a successful blog can easily be learnt.
All you need is to follow the right steps, stay committed and be willing to put in the work. That is literally all.
Now let’s talk about the fun stuff and why you should start an online business today.
1.Your income is only controlled by you:
The elephant in the room: Can you really make a full time income blogging?!
This is the most obvious but primary reason why people want to start an online business on the side. The best thing I love about having my own online business i.e. this blog is that how much I earn is completely dependent on my actions and decisions.
I work full time in a corporate and no matter how well I perform, my pay is always going to be capped and my growth partially limited which is not the case here.
And let’s face it, an extra $1000 a month is really helpful whether that’s for paying off debt, building an emergency fund, or even for your bills.
The best thing is that as long as you follow the required steps and stay committed, it really isn’t that difficult to make your first $1000 in just a few months and as far as how much money can you make overall – again, it’s all on you.
2. You decide and design your schedule everyday:
I’m going to be real with you: the first few months, especially if you already have a full time job will be a mess. You will have to make time to work on your business and that will include sacrificing social hours and brunches.
Once those few months go by and you start earning a steady income, you can do this full time. And what comes with financial freedom, is the freedom to design your day as you like.
You choose when to wake up, when to work, where to work, how many hours you want to work and more. You can make time for your family, your friends, your loved ones, your hobbies, and travel more! It’s a dream.
3. You don’t have to be tech-savvy:
I’m the least tech-savvy person I know. It didn’t turn out to be any problem (at all!) because there are so many amazing step by step guides online that teach you exactly how to have your website set up and running in less than 3 hours!
I was even luckier because I had invested in a course which was so detailed that I knew exactly what to buy, what to do, and how to set the blog up. It only took me a few hours and the tech was out of the way.
4. It costs less than starting a business that isn’t online:
This one is probably my favorite. Launching a successful blog requires you to make a small investment just like any other business. However, the investment is so far less than any brick and mortar business.
Let me break down the blogging expenses you will incur the first few months:
A)Hosting:You can start as low as $3.95 per month with Bluehost for WordPress hosting.
B)Tailwind: This is $14.99/month if you choose the monthly plan or $9.99/month if you choose the annual plan.
C) Email marketing: $29/month with ConvertKit (which I use and highly recommend).
D) Investment in courses: This is not optional if you want to create a profitable blog.
I personally spent around $160 on a course teaching how to launch a blog from scratch and make your first $1000 per month and I’m so glad I did because it saved me months of time. I could have never found that information online and I was months ahead in my blogging game because of the course
In fact, the course was so good that it has now been updated and priced at $297 and since I have lifetime access, I get all the updates for free. I would highly recommend the course I took to anyone who is busy and new to blogging and wants to make grow their blog to making their first $1000/month!
The best part about it and the reason I was willing to make the investment is because the creators offer a 100% money back guarantee if you show that you applied what was taught and didn’t see the results. Of course, I never had to ask for the refund but it was comforting to know that the risk was off my shoulders.
5. You can start a business about something you’re passionate about:
What is the one thing you cannot shut up about? The one thing that you would love sharing with people? Whether that’s knowledge about new tech, baking, lifestyle, parenting, sports, gardening, personal finance, fashion, beauty, health or something else: you can 100% start a business about something you’re extremely passionate about and love.
6. You’ll constantly learn new skills:
I started this blog with zero knowledge of anything blogging related. All I knew is that I was passionate about what I was writing and I was willing to put in the work. Here’s everything I learnt in my first few months:
1. How to set up a website using WordPress
2. Navigate in and out of WordPress smoothly
3. Affiliate marketing
4. How to create viral content
5. How to make money from a blog and turn it into an online business.
6. Email marketing
7. Keyword researc
8. How to drive organic traffic, and so much more!
This is such an amazing opportunity to learn and level-up your skill set. It forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and get the work done.
The best part is that with so many affordable courses available, you never have to worry about figuring it out alone. You can learn from those who have already done this and are amazing at it!
7. The market isn’t saturated (Seriously!):
I’ve heard so many people say “Oh but there are already so many blogs in this particular niche, I don’t think I can make a place for myself.” and I always say “Of course you can!”.
While it seems like everyone has a blog, really there are so so many opportunities here. You can start one and make money, I can start one and make money, your friends and family can start one and make money.
The market is not saturatedand as long as you can provide value to your audience, you will have a place.
8. You’re the boss:
You own the blog, you are the boss. You get to make 100% of the decisions. You set the deadlines and you only report to yourself. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? (You also approve your own holiday applications, FYI).
9. You don’t need a product to get started:
You can totally build a website and sell a product you’ve created but you definitely don’t need one.
There are various methods in which you can monetize your blog such as ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsorship and more.
And if you do decide that you want to create and sell your very own product or service, you can introduce that on your already established blog as long as it relates to the same niche.
10. You can change lives:
When you create content keeping the needs of your audience in mind you help them take their first step towards changing their life by solving a problem they had or teaching them something they had been looking for.
I see so many people who have so much knowledge and so much value they can provide and they don’t even know it yet. Either that, or they think what they have to say is not important.
Don’t let that be you. There are hundreds and thousands of people out there who are looking for what you have to offer. Start today!
I hope this post has given you enough reasons to go after the idea of starting a blog. If you’re still unsure because you aren’t sure if you have what it takes – please let me be the one to tell you that you do have what it takes.
Make this decision for yourself, take a chance on yourself (if not you, then who?!), give yourself the benefit of the doubt and go for it.
