12 reasons why you should start your blogging journey today.
If the thought or question of “Should I start a blog/online business” has ever crossed your mind, congratulations! You’re way ahead of thousands and thousands of people who have never even thought about doing this and gain the financial and time freedom that comes with it.
I started out at the age of 21, while studying and working a full time corporate job. Heck, I love corporates.
This is what I had always envisioned myself doing. You see, I’m not one of the “I always had the traits of a born entrepreneur” or “I loved sales and marketing” kind of person. Heck, I hated sales because I had the social skills of a chicken nugget.
Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to know that if I can start an online business and be on my way to make an extra couple thousand dollars a month, so can you.
I’m your average Jane and it is important for you to know this so that you know that you don’t need to have a special background or in-born talent to do this. Nuh-uh.
Don’t get me wrong, blogging does require you to put in a lot of work and is in no way an “easy” way to make money. At the same time, the skills you require to build and run a successful blog can easily be learnt.
All you need is to follow the right steps, be determined towards your end goal, and be willing to put in the work. That is literally all.
Now let’s talk about the fun stuff, the perks, and why you should start an online business today.
1. Your income is only controlled by you:
This is the most obvious but primary reason why people want to start an online business on the side. The best thing I love about having my own online business i.e. this blog is that how much I earn is completely dependent on my actions and decisions.
While working in a corporate, no matter how well I perform, my pay is always going to be capped which is just not the case here.
And let’s face it, an extra $1000 a month is really helpful whether that’s for paying off debt, building an emergency fund, or even for your bills.
The best thing is that as long as you follow the required steps, it really isn’t that difficult to make your first $1000 and as far as how much money can you make overall – again, it’s all on you. You can have a seven figure online business if you put in the work! Isn’t that so exciting?
2. You decide and design your schedule everyday:
I’m going to be real with you: the first few months, especially if you already have a full time job will be hectic. You will have to make time to work on your business and that may include sacrificing some other activities.
Once those few months go by and you start earning a steady income, you can do this full time. And what comes with financial freedom, is the freedom to design your day as you like.
You choose when to wake up, when to work, where to work, how many hours you want to work and more. You can make time for your family, your friends, your loved ones, your hobbies. It’s a dream.
3. You don’t have to be tech-savvy:
I’m the least tech-savvy person I know. It didn’t turn out to be any problem (at all!) because there are so many amazing step by step guides online that teach you exactly how to have your website set up and running in less than 3 hours!
I was even luckier as I had purchased a course which was so detailed that I knew exactly what to buy and how to set it up. It only took me a few hours and I was so relieved to get it out of the way.
4. It costs less than starting a business that isn’t online:
This one is probably my favourite. All businesses require an investment and so does an online business. The difference, however, is that you don’t have to break the bank in order to start your blog.
Let me break down the blogging expenses you will incur the first 3 months:
A) Hosting: You can start as low as $2.95 per month with Bluehost for WordPress hosting. Of course they do have 12-36 month plans but the price for those has to be paid up-front. Oh and you get the domain name free!
B) Blog theme: This one really depends on your personal preference and how you choose to pay. I purchased this particular theme for about $11.
C) Email marketing: This step usually comes in once you’re ready to start driving traffic and this comes to about $29/month with ConvertKit (which I use and highly recommend).
D) Investment in courses: This is not optional if you want to get right to the steps and start making money.
I personally spent around $160 on a course teaching how to launch a blog from scratch and make your first $1000 per month and I’m so glad I did because I didn’t have to spend any time collecting information and could get to work right away. Plus, the majority of the stuff they teach, you can never find online for free.
In fact, the course was so good that it has now been updated and priced at $297 and since I have lifetime access, I get all the updates for free. I would highly recommend the course I took to anyone wanting to start.
The best part about it and the reason I was willing to make the investment is because the creators offer a 100% money back guarantee if you show that you applied what was taught and didn’t see the results.
Of course, I never had to ask for the refund.
E) Miscellaneous expenses: These include any social media tools or any other expenses that aren’t necessary but you choose to go for like additional software or courses. I wouldn’t expect these to go over $30/month.
5. You can start a business about something you’re passionate about:
This one is amazing. I love money, self-growth, and personal development. I love talking about money and I constantly work and love up-leveling my life. I’m able to combine these topics, teach them to my audience, and turn this into my business which I love running because I enjoy what I teach!
6. You’ll constantly learn new skills:
I started this blog 3 months ago and here are all the things I’ve learnt so far:
- How to set up a website using WordPress.
- Navigate in and out of WordPress smoothly.
- Affiliate marketing.
- How to write posts that your audience loves.
- How to make money from a blog and turn it into an online business.
- Email marketing
- Keyword searches.
- How to drive organic traffic.
I’ll be honest, I don’t enjoy some of those. But they’re a part of running this blog and I now know how to do them so I can simply get it out of the way.
This is search an amazing opportunity to learn and level-up your skill set. It forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and get the work done.
The best part is that with so many affordable courses available, you never have to worry about figuring it out alone. You can learn from those who have already done this and are amazing at it!
7. The market isn’t saturated (Seriously!):
I’ve heard so many people say “Oh but there are already so many blogs in this particular niche, I don’t think I can make a place for myself.” and I always say “Of course you can!”.
While it seems like everyone has a blog, really there are so so many opportunities here. You can start one and make money, I can start one and make money, your friends and family can start one and make money. The market is not saturated and as long as you can provide value to your audience, you will have a place.
8. There are steps and guides you can follow to be successful:
I love this, you guys. From selecting which hosting to use, to writing your first blog post, deciding what to write about, to making your first affiliate sales and even your first $1000 and beyond, there are specific steps you can follow in order to reach your goal.
This is not to say that there isn’t trial and error or that there is no space for creativity. Of course there is. You have complete creative control in your writing. Once you figure out the steps and crack the code, you can without a doubt, learn how to reach your goal.
And the best part is that you have courses out there that teach you how to do just that. In fact, I’m so lucky that the only course that I purchased has steps lined out for buying hosting, setting up my website, selecting a niche, writing my first post, driving organic traffic, making my first affiliate sale, creating my email list, SEO, writing my first email, and making my first $1000/per month.
9. Passive income:
I’ve already touched on this before and that’s only because it’s a dream most of us have. Even if you aren’t looking to make this full time, extra income never hurts. Ask yourself what you would do if you had an extra $1000 a month? Or an extra $5000 a month? Or if you made 6 figures? The income potential is unlimited, guys.
10. You’re the boss:
You own the blog, you are the boss. You get to make 100% of the decisions. You set the deadlines and you only report to yourself. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? (You also approve your own holiday applications, FYI).
11. You don’t need a product to get started:
You can totally build a website and sell a product you’ve created if that’s what you want. But you definitely don’t need one.
There are various methods in which you can monetize your blog such as ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsorships and more.
And if you do decide that you want to create and sell your very own product or service, you can introduce that on your already established platform as long as it relates to the same niche.
12. You can change lives:
Having money is amazing. But providing value that helps someone take their first step towards changing their life, grow their confidence, and have them benefit from something you recommend or teach is the best feeling in the world.
I see so many people who have so much knowledge and so much value they can provide and they don’t even know it. Either that, or they think what they have to say is not important. We all have the potential to change lives. Start today, start now.
I hope this post has given you enough reasons to go after the idea of starting a blog. If you’re still unsure because you aren’t sure if you have what it takes – please let me be the one to tell you that you do have what it takes.
Make this decision for yourself, take a chance on yourself, give yourself the benefit of the doubt and go for it. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to make an extra income.
